Выражение встречается в следующем контексте:

"Save on your account, my dearest Aylmer," observed his wife, "I might wish to put off this birthmark of mortality by relinquishing mortality itself in preference to any other mode........"

По-моему, это означает "Экономь на себе, мой дорогой..."

Или буквально "сэкономь на своих объяснениях", т.е. не надо длинных рассуждений, мол чего там, не надо слов, все не так страшно -- наливай да пей :)

Typical XIX century usage (or it's fair imitation) = "if it were not for you". Nothing to do with savings and bank accounts. :-)
