The gun director mode is employed at ranges under 5 nautical miles. The radar provides target position, range, and velocity data to drive the gun aiming point on the HUD. The pilot then positions the pipper on the selected target and squeezes the trigger.

IMHO
positions the pipper on the selected target = выполняет наведение на цель (захват цели). Pipper - прицел ("точка" прицела).

т.к. pip - отметка цели, то pipper что-то вроде целеуловителя, прицела

Я лично склоняюсь к целеуловителю, т.к. цель может быть визуально невидима и наводка осуществляется по локатору.
