Subject: граматика: the more..., the better... Lingvo: 1)The longer the price band that preceded the gap, the longer the subsequent trend. 2)The more barbarous is a nation, the more imposing and peremptory are its claims. 3)The more self-knowledge we have, the more control we can exert over our feelings and behaviour. |
The more you study, the more you know, the more you know, the more you forget, the more you forget, the less you know. Why study?
The longer the price band is, the longer the subsequent trend is. |
1)The longer the price band preceding the gap, the longer the subsequent trend. 2)The more barbarous a nation is, the more imposing and peremptory its claims (are). 3)The more we know about ourselves, the more control we have over our feelings and behaviour. and tada! things look fine. little editing and they are perfectly lovely specimens of the wonders of the English language. :) |
well no, you have to think about what you want to say to the reader, and how you are saying it. take for example number 2. without is and are it become more active, more assertive speech. if the tone of the text is active/assertive, leave them out. if the tone is more passive, leave them in. number 1 is business. business texts tend to be active as business is an active active and sometimes overactive thing. but number 2 could be in a political science text, or a philosophy text, etc... some of these tend to have more passive tones and some of them active, depending on the author. so be careful and pay attention tone and style! |
Nina, thank you very much for detailed explanations!!!! And one more question concerning the 2nd variant: Is it possible to use the preditate first and then the subject? For example: The higher IS the class of the building, the the larger IS the common use area. The larger IS the brain of an animal, the smarter it is. The larger IS the difference between min_threshold and max_threshold, the larger IS the threshold at which a given curve becomes constant. If so, in which cases are these variants used? |
i wouldn't do it |
Thanks a lot! You've been a great help! |
