Most hotels in Ontario charge their customers the destination marketing fee (DMF). Prior to the budget, the DMF formed part of the fair value of the charge for transient accommodation, on which retail sales tax at 5% was applied. Effective May 19, 2004, a temporary exemption is being granted for a year, but only if the following conditions are met:

The DMF is forwarded by the vendor to a not-for-profit corporation or not-for-profit agency for the exclusive purpose of promoting tourism in the region or municipality in which the hotel is located
The DMF is shown separately on the invoice or receipt
The DMF does not exceed 3% of the fair value of the accommodation charges
