Welds are to be tested by using flat cross-weld tensile specimens. The rhickness "a" of the specimen is normally the wall thickness. If the wall thickness is greater than 30 mm but less than 50 mm, the specimens may be machined down on one side to a thickness of 30 mm. With thicknesses of 50 mm and over two or more specimens regularly spaced over the section are to be prepared. This tensile test is carried out to determine the tensile strength of the welded joint and the position and type of the fracture.
