Stress whitening of polypropylene is regarded as being caused by the disentanglement of polymer chains in the boundary regions between individual spherulites. Under a mechanical load, the polymer stretches and the non-crystalline regions between large crystals are elongated. At first, the only external sign is a change in light transmission. If the load is increased even further, the material is damaged. An increase in the crystallinity reduces stress whitening.
