In the second half of the twentieth century the increasing economic importance of the Pacific and the increasing levels of trade between the states on its shores (California also became the most populous American state) merely reinforced these trends. This was, however, a major departure in world history. Until the development of modern communications the Pacific had acted as a barrier to interchange between the various societies that clustered around its shores.
