подскажите, пожалуйста, как же эта самая планировка-"распашонка" может быть переведена на английский?

This is a difficult one as in America, for instance, most apartments are 'raspashonka' layout. Usually whatever does not fit the standard is defined, as in - loft, studio, railroad apartment, EIK (eat in kitchen), etc.

You could say 'windows on/facing both/two sides' or something similar. I have heard of 'wing' layout, but I'm not sure whether it'll be widely understood.

2Vittorio - it's an apartment with one room flowing into the next and into the next, like railroad cars. i believe they first appeared in post-war tenement buildings in america

2essie - as far as i understand, while 'raspashonka' has indeed 2 doors opposite one another it is the fact that the windows face two sides that makes this layout of more value on Russian real estate market. As I said, I have heard 'wing' layout used before, but it isn't common or common knowledge. Much depends on what this translation is for (as always :))

There is a Russian term (sootvetstvie) to "railroad apartment". It is "anfilada". However, it is so very much older and is characteristic of palace architecture. If you saw "Masquerade" (a film shot about 1937 after the play by Lermontov) Arbenin was following Nina through the enfilade of rooms. You can probably see them in old "kommunalky" in today's Povarskaya or Stoleshnikov but chances are the apartments were resold and then refurbished and lost much of their charm and enfilade layout, too.

2Natalya - yes and no. a railroad apartment may have a bathroom or kitchen between the two rooms. also, even a railroad apartment may, and often does, have windows on opposite sides. i have, unfortunately, seen old kommunalky. there are still plenty of them in st.pete.
