Subject: side salad
Happy New Year!!! And could you help me with "side salad", please? I have the version "порция салата", but maybe someone has the exact variant of translating it into Russian...

Don't know what it is for sure and have a hard time translating it into Russian, but I think "side salad" is a salad given in addition to (maybe before) the main dish.
And Happy New Year to you as well. :)))

= "and salad on the side" (Thamior got it right)

'side salad' is simply a smaller portion of salad. it can be on the same plate as an entre/main course but usually it comes as a 'side dish', in addition to the main course. a regular portion of salad, as opposed to 'side', is much larger and can be eaten as a meal in itself. if you're translating a menu, i'd call it a 'small salad' or 'malenkaya portsia salada', but if it's an insignificant detail of the text, just leave it as 'salad'.

'on the side', whether it's salad, potato, vegetable, etc. - means that it's served with that. example - apple pie with ice cream on the side, burger with fries and salad on the side, t-bone steak with fries, baked or mashed potato on the side, and so on. also, house salad with dressing on the side, means that you don't want your salad mixed with the dressing, you want it served 'dry' with dressing in a separate bowl.

one other thing - in most restaurants you can order a 'side salad' without having to order the main dish. a menu usually has a section called "side dishes" and it offers garnishes, salad, bread, etc. - same things that you can get with the main dish but you can order them by themeselves. it is understood that a side dish is a small portion of whatever it is.

2Annaa - house salad is the regular salad of a particular restaurant. it is usually a basic salad of greens, tomato and cucumber with choice of dressing. sometimes a house salad comes with 'house' dressing - ie, specialty dressing of the house/restaurant.

Скорее уж "подгарнировка", как это называли в советских столовых :)
