Could argue about that because this is the exact words we use in courts so why not use it in contracts - what's the differrence - same legal language. As to me, regarding "точно или примерно" - why substitute original words with something else? Also when you do simalteneous you don't have time for this anyway.

To:Igor Kravchenko-Berezhnoy: you can't use other words - it should be AT or AROUND the time specified preventing a variance between the pleading and the proof (in criminal); when used in nonpleading contexts (such as above), the phrase is mere jargon.

I guess we are in trouble. If this trend (of totally disregarding Russian grammar, syntax, and common sense) persists, we'll wind up talking and writing some kind of Pidgin Runglish in no time. The phrase I proposed does convey the meaning of the source phrase. My translation is not ideal, and surely something more elegant could be coined, but I see nobody is even trying. Too bad.

Разумеется, вызывает. Так же, как "закончить дом строительством". Может, "в или примерно" и стало уже нормой, но поражает, почему не придумали чего-нибудь более удобоваримого.

How would you translate then the following using criteria of elegance (keep in mind as less words as better):
"the defendant, XX, on or about the 28th day of August, 1995, at and in the County of Nowhere, did commit the ......."
I will appreciate your ideas and also would you omit the word "day"? or it has to be in translation sentence to maintain the same level of language. Note that it doesn't mean "Beginning from..."

Опустить слово "day" не только можно, но и должно. Потому что не говорится "28 дня августа". Вы, кажется, хотите сказать, что для того, чтобы maintain the same level of language, нужно так и оставить? А как вы тогда переведете стандартное " this here Agreement is signed...." - "настоящий ЗДЕСЬ Договор"?

Лично я за этим вижу какую-то запуганную неуверенность в выразительной силе собственного языка. Как будто, нагромоздив "до или примерно декабря", тем самым достигается большая верность оригиналу и адекватность его смыслу. Да как раз наоборот. Показать такой перевод юристу-англичанину с хорошим знанием русского - почти наверняка он скажет то же самое.
