I think that "Чемпионат сильно (остро, etc.) оспаривается этими спортсменами" is probably correct.

Я думаю, что в данном контексте championship = чемпионство, за которое спортсмены ведут яростную (острую) борьбу (или за которое среди спортсменов развернулось острое/яростное соперничество). Распространенные спортивные клише.
