правда, "to time" значит от начала до конца, а "засечь время" относится только к началу процесса (по-моему)

i think it depends on context. 'start the clock' refers precisely to the beginning of the process, but if it's as Marusia says, засеки время моей прбежки, then it implies beginning and end, so 'to time', (time my run) is the appropriate one to use.
