The original saying does not specify the dancer's sex. "She said she's always been a dancer" (The Beatles)

As you know, in Russian masculine is used generically - водитель, полковник, врач, космонавт, you name it. "Шофёр автобуса - мой лучший друг" -- said of a woman. The same refers to танцор. Танцовщица is a ballet word. The saying in point has nothing to do with ballet dancing.
