Мне нужно корректно сказать "...такие матрицы это вообще отстой и пережиток прошлого."
то есть сохранить стиль, но тем не менее передать иронию как в русском.

kath - otstoy, even though it means, technically, "sediment, sludge", is actually commonly used in everyday (youth) slang to mean "crap, smth ridiculously, pathetically useless", "no good".

Rudut's son even spells it ацтой ;-))

V - what about 'gody otstoya' as in years of stagnation? i thought otstoy, whichever way you spell it in russian (sorry, it's easier for me to transliterate), evolved into the current slang form from there. or am i mistaken?

You meant "ZAstoy" (Russian for stagnation), i'm sure, not "otstoy" (Russian for - see above)...

Saying "eto - otstoy" is like saying "it's junk / garbage / dreck / a piece of crap/ it sucks / it's hopelessly out of fashion", etc

The Brezhnev years were known as "Gody Zastoya".

Try not wearing pants in England and announcing that to your office mates! In the US it is sometimes called 'going commando' by boys, but pants are knickers in good old Blighty (as you most likely know).

But I generally have problems with homonyms. Thank god it's not malopropism yet. :)

Это был лозунг\"корпоративный призыв" английских лётчиков во время Второй мировой войны.

Катенька, я ж не так чтоб особо спец по Англии - просто этнографией интересуюсь, и во всех странах, где жил - всегда пытливо присматр\слуш\глядывался ;-)

Re. Picadilly - I'm interested in anything that's not of encyclopedic or textbook nature. Anecdotes, rumors, stories, etc. Vivid film, cultural, literary references...

Don't worry though, I've already ordered London by E. Rutherford, perused Oscar Wilde's plays and am about to leaf through Dickens.
