С 13 в. текст "Страстей" исполнялся в диалогической манере, с нач. 16 в. озвучивался в формах полифонического многоголосия мотетные "Страсти". В 17-18 вв. распространился ораториальный тип "Страстей" использовались речитатив, ария, вокальные ансамбли, ритурнели и др.. Расцвет жанра связан с немецкой культурой 18 в.
