The percentage marked on the sign can be varied to reflect the road conditions. Our example shows a 10% downward gradient this means that for every metre travelled forward 0.1 of a metre will be lost in elevation.
This sign is often used in combination with supplementary plates 525, 526 and 527 all of which warn drivers to use a low gear to regulate speed so as to not overheat their brakes.
