peace operation
mil., logist. Operation aiming at preserving peace or facilitating the restoration thereof in a country victim of a domestic crisis or between two countries, while there stands a major threat for the security or survival of the populations. This impartial operation is conducted with or without the consent of the parties: it is placed under Chapters VI or VII of the United Nations Charta, and is initiated by a mandate given by an international organization. This term encompasses: 1. operations in support of preventive diplomacy; 2. peace restoration operations; 3. peacekeeping operations; 4. peace enforcement operations; 5. peace-building operations. These missions take place within the framework of operations of variable intensity, with the participation of military forces as well as that of diplomatic and humanitarian organizations. (FRA)
