aerial reconnaissance
mil., logist. A type of reconnaissance consisting of a combination of measures planned and carried out by military command and control organizations at every level with the aim of acquiring information about enemy forces and installations, theatre infrastructure, the terrain and the weather as well as the nuclear and the chemical situations. Air reconnaissance is carried out on behalf of all services by crews, subunits and units of manned or unmanned remotely guided reconnaissance aircraft or lighter-than-air vehicles, and also by the crews of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft during their combat missions. Air reconnaissance may be strategic, operational or tactical. The most common methods are visual observation and reconnaissance using optronic and radar equipment. (UKR/NATO)
