med. A group of bacteria. Salmonella is the most common cause of foodborne illnesses in the United States. Infection with Salmonella can cause diarrhea, nausea, fever, and headache. In people with weakened immune systems, including people with HIV, the symptoms of Salmonella infection are more severe.
