In 1975 a congressional investigation discovered the CIA had virtually every editor from the major news outlets in their pocket. The Church Hearings, as they were called, uncovered the government was spending a billion dollars a year (in 2014 dollars) to secretly pay editors and reporters to work as gatekeepers and propagandists for the establishment.
