Offensive, defensive or counteroffensive large-scale battles, combat operations, engagements, strikes and manoeuvres by units and tactical formations of an army, interrelated and synchronized in aim, mission, place and time. An army operation is mounted and conducted in a particular strategic operational area as part of a front operation in a theatre. It is conducted with assigned tactical formations and units only, or in cooperation with other major formations, tactical formations and units of various services, arms or branches of the armed forces, specialized support troops and other formations acting for the army. An army operation normally involves actions by tactical formations and units of all operational echelons, the tactical mobile reserve, missile and artillery formations and units, air, ground and air defense forces, and the army reserve, as well as by organic specialized support troops. It may also include airborne/amphibious landings or airdrops and related assault operations. Preparation for an army operation consists of: deciding on an operation; tasking the forces involved; operational planning; organization of fire for effect, of cooperation with all other forces and of all aspects of their logistic support and command and control; preparing the troops and the ground for combat; troops deploying and taking up positions, etc. (UKR/NATO)
