desert.	aeolian desertification (荒漠化的一种类型，指人类不合理的经济活动改变地表结构和覆被状况，造成土地风蚀，产生风沙活动，使地面出现风蚀和风积物，景观类似沙漠的变化过程); sandy desertification (指在干旱、半干旱和半湿润地区，由于人为破坏生态平衡，使原非沙漠的地区出现以风沙活动为主要特征的类似沙漠环境的退化。应当指出，荒漠化 (desertification) 一词是由原法国殖民部水利森林局局长A. Aubreville 针对撒哈拉荒漠以南的土地退化于1949年在《热带非洲的气候，森林和荒漠化 (Climats、forests et desertification L'Arigue tropicale、Societe Ediiton Geographique、Mantines et Coloniales、Paris)一书中提出来的。至于沙漠化一词，中国早在20世纪40年代初期就有了(田家英、沙漠化的愿望，延安《解放日报》，1941 〜1943年)，比荒漠化一词的提出早6〜7年。到50年代初，陶克在谈到陕北毛乌素沙地的形成问题时，用"沙漠化"和"沙化"术语论述得比较精辟(陕北的沙漠现状及其改造利用问题，《中国林业》，1951年2卷1期)。可见，沙漠化一词并非源于荒漠化一词)

The process of land damage which allows the soil to spread like a desert in arid and semi-arid regions. There is a loss of vegetative cover and the soil deteriorates in texture, nutrient content and fertility. Desertification affects the lives of three-quarters of the world's population, 70% of all drylands and one quarter of the total land area of the planet. There are many reasons for desertification, but the majority are caused by human activities, overgrazing, deforestation, poor land management and over-exploitation.
