mil., logist. The status of forces that enables them to begin combat operations and to accomplish their missions within a prescribed period. In the armed forces, it is usual to apply several levels of combat readiness. The peacetime readiness level provides for a timely transition to a war footing, deployment and engagement. The build-up of combat readiness in formations and units ships is either gradual from the lowest level to the highest, or straight to the highest, by-passing the intermediate stages. This is achieved by a range of measures covering organization and mobilization, as well as technical and other measures, according to an established timetable. The higher level of readiness, the less time forces require to prepare for action. The highest level of combat readiness is readiness for immediate action.
