mil., logist.	Subunits, units, ships or formations specially designated to carry out the combat alert mission. Their strength, roles and missions are determined by the commander concerned and by the relevant directives or orders. This also applies to the prescribed levels of combat readiness, combat alert procedures, the build-up of combat readiness and effective combat strength, the execution of their tasks and the command and control process. Combat alert forces operate in close cooperation with the early warning system. In wartime, forces and assets are designated for combat alert duty during the period when the forces are engaged in limited operations, usually of a defensive nature.
