A large part of a continent including the surrounding sea and ocean waters, with islands and adjacent continental shorelines and the air and space above them, within which strategic force groupings are deployed and strategic operations may be conducted. Depending on its geographical position, a theatre of operations may be continental or maritime. The boundaries and structure of a theatre of operations are defined by the military and political leaders of states or coalitions of states.
