Цифры указывают на содержимое бутылок, а не их количество. Но нормальный контекст не помешал бы. |

And does 100/500/1,000 refer to the number of (tablets/whatever) in each bottle/strip, or the number of bottles/strips in sth else such as a box or package? If it's the former, this would normally be written either: * in (sizes/bottles) (of/containing) 100, 500 and 1,000 (tablets/whatever); or Open double quotation marks (‟) are never used in the way you've shown. I've telephoned my local pharmacist, who's confirms this and says that it's badly-written. Double quotation marks (") are used to indicate inches, of course – but that won't apply here. Also, a blister usually contains just one tablet or capsule; if there are (say) 7 or 14 of them in a row/two rows, it's usually termed a 'blister pack' or 'blister strip', ie a pack/strip of 7/14. So it's probably been written in/translated into English by someone with poor English. |

| Also he says that, although most tablets/capsules/caplets are supplied in multiples of 7 (ie 7, 14, 28, 56 etc) because there are 7 days in a week, some (such as paracetamol) are often supplied to pharmacies in multiples of 10, as in your example. |

Amor 71: Strictly speaking, yes, 100's, 500's and 1,000's (with a single apostrophe) is incorrect here and 100s, 500s and 1,000s should be used instead, because the s indicates a plural, not a possessive (as in Dad's car) or a contraction of is (as in He's happy). However, native English speakers, even educated ones, often (incorrectly) include one. For example, phrases such as Pop music from the 1980's are often (incorrectly) used instead of Pop music from the 1980s: Unfortunately most people don't know the difference – but on the other hand, most people don't notice the difference and don't care, either. You're right, though: single apostrophes should be avoided in examples like the asker's which show quantities expressed in digits. |

I forgot to thank you for explanation, John. I have seen "1980's" many times, but when I read "will make any sensitive reader’s eyes bleed" I thought it is a huge NO-NO. |

I didn't miss it, I was just being discreet and didn't want to ruin Amor's day! (He also wrote "make U-turns in restricted area" instead of "in a restricted area" (single) or "in restricted areas" (plural) – but you won't tell him, will you...?) :-) Also, we now know who the mysterious Apostrophe Vigilante of Bristol is: "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No – it's....
Seriously, I can't criticise Amor's English, because (apart from the minor errors above) it's normally very good – and certainly better than my Russian! And at least he tries to write in English on a Russian website, whereas I don't bother to write in Russian. Also he was quite right about 100's, 500's etc. |
