From The TimesNovember 08, 2003 Lost in translation MOUSE OR RAT? TRANSLATION AS NEGOTIATION By Umberto Eco Weidenfeld & Nicolson' £12.99; 164pp ISBN 0 297 830015 Buy the book One can have an unexpectedly amusing time with translation. In a spare moment, navigate to AltaVista’s translating tool, http://babelfish. altavista.com, and try to convert some lines from a famous poem or novel into another language. It is Umberto Eco who suggests this pastime in his new essay on translation, before giving us some favourite examples of the sort of strange things that the computer comes up with as it translates English into Italian and German. “The works of Shakespeare” become “Gli impianti di Shakespeare” (The plants of Shakespeare). “Speaker of the chamber of deputies ” becomes “Altoparlante dell’alloggiamento dei delegati” (Loudspeaker of the lodging of the delegates). And “Studies in the logic of Charles Sanders Peirce” becomes “Studien in der Logik der Charlessandpapierschleifmaschinen Peirce” (Studies in the logic of the Charles of sandpaper grinding machines Peirce). |

From the Reader's Digest: Back in September 1996, I returned from Russia after living there nearly two years. One of the biggest changes during my absence was the advent of the Internet. My sister decided to surprise me by creating "welcome home" signs in Russian. She went to a website that offered translations and typed in "Welcome Home, Cole." She then printed the translated phrase onto about 20 colored cardboard signs. When I got off the plane, the first thing I saw was my family, excitedly waving posters printed with a strange message. My sister gave me a big hug, and pointed proudly to her creations. "Isn't that great?" she said. "Bet you didn't think I knew any Russian." I admitted that I was indeed surprised -- and so was she when I told her what the signs actually said: "Translation not found." |

A man was walking along a river bank (the land at the side of a river is called a bank) when he saw a man walking along the opposite bank. He called across, "Hey, how do I get to the other side of the river?" The other man looked confused and shouted back, "You're on the other side of the river already." |
