Возвращаясь к теме, уже с результатами разысканий.

Для термина discussion словарь m-w дает точнехонько те два значения, с которых мы начали:

1 : consideration of a question in open and usually informal debate
2 : a formal treatment of a topic in speech or writing

Второе и есть про статьи и доклады – типа изложение.

Теперь смотрим уже упомянутое panel discussion, это всего лишь a formal discussion by a panel
Но при этом panel определяется как (помимо юридических и т.п. формальных значений)
a group of persons who discuss before an audience a topic of public interest;
или a group of entertainers or guests engaged as players in a quiz or guessing game on a radio or television program
То есть в русском это все перетолковали по-своему.

Вообще телевидение дает несколько интересных терминов для обозначения видов дискуссий/дебатов :

fishbowl discussion
a form of discussion in which an audience may observe the discussion panel without actively participating. The discussion panel is often seated within a circle of chairs (the "fishbowl"), and discussion may be guided by questions related to a specific subject but may branch out into relatively broad areas. A member of the audience may enter the discussion by tapping the shoulder of one of those currently in the fishbowl and filling his or her seat, thus becoming an active participant in the discussion while the one who was "tapped out" becomes a silent observer.

balloon debate
a debate in which a number of speakers attempt to win the approval of an audience. The audience is invited to imagine that the speakers are flying in a hot-air balloon which is sinking and that someone must be thrown out if everyone is not to die. Each speaker has to make the case why they should not be thrown out of the balloon to save the remainder. Typically each participant speaks on behalf of a famous person, profession, fictional character, etc.

A round table is one which has no "head" and no "sides", and therefore no one person sitting at it is given a privileged position and all are treated as equals. The idea stems from the Arthurian legend about the Knights of the Round Table in Camelot.

И под конец еще один частичный синоним для «обсуждения» -- FORUM

V, дык дискуссия дискусии рознь. Иногда бывают такие дискуссии, что больше напоминают энту самую трепотню :-))
