And what is more interesting is the decline of the Russian language. |
Nina79, there is no decline in any language until it starts disappearing with those dying who speak this language. |
Nina79, are you really so anxious about Russian language? Why? |
I am not joking. Have you listened to the youth here (at least in Moscow i see it) and then spoken with someone over 45? the decline is evident |
and yes i am anxious about it. it makes me sad just as the decline of english makes me sad. the decline of any language is a disturbing thing |
USA are trying to steal our future - to destroy our youth. |
yes this youth is fit for nothing - I agree |
drugs, bad music, sex... |
antipod, you may be insane. we dont want to steal anything from you. we already stole it :) and the youth is good for plenty here --- just not for the written or spoken word. though there are a few VERY intelligent youngins in my life at the moment |
Russia rulezzzz, brains here are quite OK |
Yes, I'm listening to the youth here in Moscow every single day, and I'm myself not far from that age, so what? You and, obviously, a great number of Russian philologists argue that this is a decline. Though, it isn't. The language the youth speak is different from the language the youth of the 1950s-1960s spoke and will be different from the language the youth of the 2020s-2030s would speak. A natural processes in any language are very often seen as evidences of decline and even coming death of a language. But there are just natural processes, nothing else. Some words emerge, some disappear. These young people will grow up and, though trying to be more revolutionary now with invention of new words and meanings, they will find themselves rather conservative as next generations will cast doubt on the past and offer something that will look radical. Language is far more than just words and meanings, it is culture - with concepts, beliefs, arts, and etc. |
erm... there should be no 'A' in the beginning of the fifth sentence... :((( |
Redni you can say the same thing about English. But the thing is, when the youth have such a weak handle on the language that they cannot even read the classics without struggling, there is decline. Slang is slang - and that's ok. But lack of education and the lack of a robust knowledge of your own dictionary and grammar constructions is another. I am not saying anything about you personally, so dont be offended. I have just seen a number of cases already in which 16 - 19 year olds cannot make heads or tails of things written maybe 50 years ago because the grammar is different from what they are used to or the words are too difficult though the vocabulary would have been standard 50 years ago and considered simple. same thing is happening with english in america and in england. the world is coming closer together and people are breaking down barriers which have divided classes and peoples for centuries, but it is sad to see that language (and the beatuy which it brings us) is suffering in the end. |

I fully agree. I think what we are being through now is a cultural collapse. Soviet times with their paternalism at least allowed for the continuity of cultural tradition, and those who wanted to be something socially tried to look and speak like Chekhovian characters, if only for lack of other heroes. As a result they did manage to inherit a lot from them, morally, culturally, and otherwise. That was an ivory tower, of course, and with perestroika it simply collapsed. The language supported us through communism, and it keeps supporting us, but it suffers losses as the old structure is eroded by the winds of change and the old "reference group" out of books is no longer appealing, giving way to characters out of gangster movies. |
Nina79 I have just seen a number of cases already in which 16 - 19 year olds cannot make heads or tails of things written maybe 50 years ago because the grammar is different from what they are used to or the words are too difficult You exaggerated the problem. There are just a number of cases, not even a trend. Without any effort and just questioning young people in your neighbourhood, you would find more examples of well-educated and perfectly speaking ones. Have you heard the news about Russian higher education over the last two-three years? While a number of school-leaving pupils is reducing, a number of those entering higher schools, universities, academies and institutions is steadily growing - the fact illustrating how much Russians, across the country, are interested in being educated and how conscious this aspiration actually is. Looking more carefully into the Russian education system, you would surely discover a plenty of other positive signs.

2 Redni **how much Russians, across the country, are interested in being educated and how conscious this aspiration actually is.** Wish you were right. It remains open to discussion how many of them just seek shelter from the army. |
Попробую по-русски. much относится к are interested, а не Russians.

Redni the number of students entering institutions has nothing to do with the level of education or a desire to be educated in the real sense. this is the same problem we have in the US at the moment (excepting reason number 1 in Russia which I listed above). We turn out thousands of idiots every year who somehow made it through the system. they then go on to an office job somewhere and then start re-learning everything they should have learned becasue without knowing you can get the job but not the promotion. |

I do know lots of families and young people who seek higher education for the sake of education, but they are all from educated background, with family values ranking culture as a first priority. These young people do study in earnest. Anyway, very few of them are well-off enough to pay for their grades. But according to official statistics, 1/3 of grades are paid for - a thing unheard of and unimaginable in Soviet times. This is what I call cultural collapse, on the part of those paying and those being paid. |
Paying for your grades is amoral in my opinion and shows a complete lack of respect for culture, for your peers, for your tutors and professors and for the whole educational sector. the whole thing makes me sick. |
