In a belated crackdown on penny-stock "pump-and-dump" schemes driven by e-mail "spam" to small investors, the US Securities and Exchange Commission halted trading Thursday in 35 "pink sheets" companies.
Among them, a loss-plagued, debt-laden and now essentially worthless Wyoming company called Amerossi International Group.

As recently as last May, Amerossi's 1.5 billion shares were trading over-the-counter at as much as 10 cents each for a market value of $150 million. Last June, CEO David Alexander touted a "revolutionary extraction technology" to get oil from tar sands certain to produce "substantial near-term revenue growth."

"Questions have arisen regarding the adequacy and accuracy of press releases concerning the company's assets," the SEC said.

In January of 2006, Amerossi's then-Chief Operating Officer Wayne Clark had told the Denver Post his company was gearing up to sell or lease Russian-made drilling rigs to Rocky Mountain contractors, utilizing
