From the looks of it -речь идёт об экспедиции на какой-то из двух полюсов или же на какую-нибудь гору, и это о перевозке провианта, клади и всякого оборудования как говорится, "на своём горбу", "на своих двоих".

Например, "Scott's game plan called for a large body of men to start out southward from their base, man-hauling food and fuel on sledges."

mahavishnu's almost got it - this was usual practice on British polar expeditions for well over 100 years (as opposed to using dogs) - and 'man-hauling' is the normal term for it. Meant to be the most exhausting physical labour possible.

What it involves is placing all equipment, food etc on a sledge, and then the expedition members walk in front of this sledge, all pulling it behind them, stopping to excevate passages through ice-fields etc. Boats would usually be necessary too when leads (open water surrounded by ice) were encountered - these also had to be hauled.
