Subject: English factory. Помогите, плиз, понять, что имеется в виду под словосочетанием "English factory" в следующем контексте.I's not a high powered career, but again I have a degree in English Literature which doesn't exactly qualify for me a high powered status corner office in the finance district. My Dad used to argue that I should major in something that would lead to a job. Didn't I know that the English factory was laying off? |

если я правильно поняла смысл, то дословно english factory - индустрия английского языка в более широком смысле можно перевести так: да я и сам понимал, что найти применение моему чисто гуманитарному образованию будет непросто (т.к. специалистов в английской литературе и так больше, чем соответствующей их квалификации работы) |

Yep, it's used as a metaphor. Consider: The car factory is laying off = mass redundancies in the car sector = difficult to get a job in the car sector. It's used in exactly the same way here as a kind of set-phrase, even if the actual 'English (language) factory' doesn't exist - the meaning is that there's no future in specialisation in English language as it's in decline. |
