Subject: gravitas

At the Women in Business conference where we met, she was fresh from a seminar in which a woman asked whether it was ever permissible to pour tea for male colleagues. Heffernan answered that if you feel you lack gravitas at work you should let someone else be Mother. Because women, in their desperation to find a place in a male environment, risk falling into one of four stereotypes, the most damaging being that of geisha: a woman who, regardless of her skills and blue-chip CV, is prized, even cultivated, for her looks and pleasing manner.
