Subject: исчисляться единицами Что-то я совсем запуталась. Скажите, пожалуйства, как правильнее перевести "исчисляться единицами" в фразе: Число собей в популяции исчисляется единицами (т.е. их очень мало).Я могу сказать, как будет "исчисляться десятками" или "исчисляться сотнями", но с единициами меня что-то заклинило. |

Extremely rare, к сожалению не подходитю Иначе все было бы просто. Там фраза такая: Численность вида ХХХ - 3 миллиона, вида ЯЯ - 10 тысяч, а численность вида ЕЕ исчисляется единицами. Rare сюда как-то не очнь ложитсяю К тому же статья научная, так что про пальцы на руке я бы не рискнула писать. |

2lesdn Кстати, насчет specimen(s). Что касается птиц и млекопитающих (насчет беспозвоночных не уверена) это слово применяется по отношению к сохлым экземплярам музейных коллекций. С живыми зверюшками оно как-то не очень |

Да, спасибо. Я должзна была уточнить, что речь идет о биологических текстах. Пол крайней мере, в приведенном выше контексте specimens использовать не стоитю Я сегодня специально просмотрела множество ссылок, и оказалось, что в зоологических текстах это так - пришлось из своего текста эти specimen'ы срочно убирать :-)) |

| specimen - хоть сушеный, хоть живой - это "образец, образчик", представитель породы. а у GK их раз-два, и обчелся, так что все верно, тут это слово не подходит |

ну я ж говорю (см. выше), что в данном контексте я бы употребила population count is in single digits а спор вышел по поводу утверждения аскера что specimen не употребляется по отношению к живым экземплярамю. that's all. :-) |
