очень imho (take it or leave it)

and a supreme political salesman - и политика, непревзойденного в изворотливости и красноречии.

political salesman - политик, способный "продать" избирателям/обществу привлекательные идеи и подходы к разрешению насущных проблемам.

"Before his demise as a result of the Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon was quite a successful political salesman. ... Nixon sold the idea that the war in Vietnam would end to the American people twice, delivering results on neither occasion. There's is something to be said of democratic politics in the modern sense when politicians can win election based on a set of so-called politics or ideals, and then essentially disown them for the purposes of expediency. A generally apathetic and politically disconnected population allows such a thing to happen."

"Bush deals in broad PR buzzwords that sound good, and he repeats them ad nauseum -- he's just a political salesman, with all the cynicism that involves. He hasn't backed his sound bites up with real leadership, or smart long-term strategy, or anything resembing integrity or honesty."

"We were grifted by a slick political salesman who made us believe we needed the product of change not unlike a used-car salesman who sucks his customers into purchasing the extended warranty."

Еще можно присовокупить классическое определение про т.Троцкого & Co
