OFF: translation programs

ok, a woman at work asked me to find out which translation programs (obviously not prompt) are any good. she wants it for her kid who is starting to learn English.
any suggestions?

thanks guys! (i know most of us here hate translation programs but, i promised i would ask and try to help her out.)

Purpose? Just a mobile dictionary? Teaching or pronunciation functions?

Ok, no translation program must come anywhere close to education.

Lingvo, Miltilex and other dictionaries include pronunciation, and are mobile if installed on notebook or PDA.

Also, there is a bunch of multimedia courses of English.

Начинающий изучать язык школьник - это ребенок максимум 10 лет. Ему бы обучающие программы, а не translation software. Плюс маленький бумажный словарик в школу, мультик/лингво и т.п. на дом. комп, при наличии лишних денег в семье - электронный переводчик Ectaco и пр.

Я ценю вашу отзывчивость к коллегам, но невозможно помочь человеку, который сам не знает, о чем просит.
Вы же должны знать как переводчик, что ХОРОШИХ программ машинного перевода не существует. Есть еще всякие Stylus или проги для перевода веб-страниц - но они нисколько не лучше Промпта.
Ребенок, который учит язык при помощи Промпта, вырастет Телепузиком :(((

I do know this and I told her this (and then sadly found out that she uses PROMPT for some of our business correspondences and almost had a HEART ATTACK!) but she asked me to ask anyhow.

I will just tell her that no one recommends it for anything and especially not for helping her kid learn proper and good english as these programs dont have good english themselves. :)

and she already knows about Lingvo but i think i am going to tell her to buy Multilex (i kind of want it myself)
