The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) and Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) have taken an important step towards producing standardized test material for evaluating the performance of digital projectors and other elements of digital cinema systems.

More Digital Cinemas On Tap

Carmike Cinemas Inc., the third largest U.S. movie theater chain, said Monday it has signed a deal with Christie/AIX to install about 2,300 digital cinema projection systems at its theaters. Networking and equipment installation for the first eight theaters is scheduled to begin January 2006. The plan is to complete all by October 2007. Carmike Cinemas are typically located in cities with populations of about 50,000 people, said Michael Patrick, chief executive of the Georgia-based chain.

"The cost of the print prohibits most of the limited movie releases from ever reaching us because our theaters are in small towns," he said. "Today, we run 35 millimeter mechanical equipment, which is much like the transmission on your car, very difficult to handle. Digital cinema will transition us into a digital push-button world."

Movie distributor Access Integrated Technologies Inc. formed the Christie/AIX subsidiary last summer to help fund the rollout of digital cinema , an industry format for movie delivery and presentation in theaters. Christie Digital Systems USA, a projector maker, agreed to support the subsidiary. The agreement has led to rollouts at many theaters. Carmike Cinemas marks the largest deployment. "The first thing we'll do is network the entire complex," said Jack Kline, president of Christie USA.

"We'll cable the theater to tie in the entire digital infrastructure and local area network, but also monitor it from our network operations center in Cypress, Calif." Satellite systems will go into every theater. "Carmike will be able to drive incremental revenue they couldn't get before and marginal gross profit on that revenue should approach between 60 percent and 65 percent because you're talking about filling seats with content they didn't have," said Bud Mayo, CEO at Access Integrated.

"Every system will be accompanied by a satellite dish on the roof and we will enable them to receive content from movies to music from record labels and sports from promoters." Experts expressed surprise that Carmike Cinemas , which focuses on serving geographic communities with less than 50,000 people, would lead theaters in the transition to digital.
