This pattern enhances the adhesiveness of any coating applied thereafter, hence the name "anchor pattern." The anchor pattern can be "angular" or "rounded" depending on the shape of the abrasive used. Rounded or oval abrasives such as steel shot or some garnets and other mineral abrasives can leave a rounded pattern that, while looking pretty, shinny and smooth is not necessarily the best thing for adhesion of a coating.
