Density grading.
Typically, three portions are produced, of which the light cut above contains product that is below the customer’s specified maximum peak carbon. The process is then repeated. The number of runs and size of Heavy, Mid and Light cuts are dependent on the size of difference as well as distribution of density among the various particles. The minimum density difference which the company has been able to provide economical results is as low as 10%. Any material that may be off-spec is rerun with no detrimental effects.

Utilizing such a process, the company is able to obtain the best possible recovery from a contaminated batch. The amount of recovery is dependent on the unloading procedures used, and can vary from 50% to as high as 90% volume basis. Process control is on a volume basis as this is most reflective of replacement cost of fresh catalyst.
