Subject: OFF this might seem strange, but i am tired of being railed by people here when i ask for help where i know i need it.so, here is the task: simply answer My opinion of gogolesque and her abilities: a)she is an utter bufoon b)she ocasionally gets it right but will never be better than she is now c)the girl has potentioal |
|

d) (((: |
c). But mostly a), I must confess. :)))))))))) |
Susan it requires an ultimate translator's skill and some legal and financial competence to do the job u are saddled with. U are a stubborn girl and are going to beat it to pulp in the end. I admit that u seem to be out of your depth at times but I would hardly up to all those queries u raise without special training and experience which I both lack. |
This will not seem to you so strange if you are longer here! :))) It is impossible to change foolish people! :((( |
с)is my choice! |
OK. My opinion of gogolesque and her abilities is that she often accept tasks she's not up to, like translating juridical texts into Russian. Such stuff requires years of specific training to do it right. If I'd be her, I'd try to stick to translating into English and to avoid highly specialized texts. No offence, naturally. |
agreed with Скай, скай, sorry for nitpicking, but **If I'd be her**. what is it?? |
|

Sky the translations arent my choice. thats half the problem. when i took the job i have they told me i would RARELY be doing english to russian stuff and that seems to be all i do now along with a bunch of other shit not even related to translating. going from russian to eng i really dont have too many problems since i do tend to know a lot of legal and financial stuff in english, but putting it in russian is pure hell (esp. since my written skills in russ are not even close to being on par with my written english) |
|

and franky, saying you agree with A but telling me C really doesnt work very well :) |
D-50 Well, it was supposed to mean smth like "Если бы я был на ее месте" "If I were her" - is this right? |
*OK if somebody explains me what does "utter bufoon" mean I'll be grateful! I belive it is nothing pleasent.* I agree with Sky absolutely. For many people this juridical stuff is like Chinese even if it's Russian:) Anyways don't get angry - you're good :))) So I guess it's c) (And a lot of people will choose that opinion, that's for sure) |
If that's the same gogolesque I knew half a year ago, it's definetly C! |
gogolesque, If people who pay you are OK with you translations, why worry? :o) |
Jesie!!! :)))) Right you are! |
|
link 14.07.2006 12:36 |
yeah its the same gogolesque who has been poking around here for some time now. she is thinking of telling her job to stuff it. thats sort of why i am asking this bizarre question. and i hope you guys are right when you say C because enough have said it to make me think i would be a bufoon (complete nincompoop/idiot) to quit |
well, your potential is smth you've been lucky enough not demonstrate properly so far (i hope). but your approach to establishing the opinions seems rather peculiar to me. |
|

sky i worry b/c i dont just want to be ok, i want to be at least good. and if i dont feel good about the work, then i dont care if they say its ok. perferctionists are like that. :) |
Tell me about perfectionism... Yet, even worse if that turns into workaholism:) |
|
link 14.07.2006 12:45 |
for now i am not a workaholic at the bank. when i was teaching english, oh hell yes, i was a workaholic. when i was doing book restoration, you couldnt get me to leave the lab! it was sick! i think i need to go back to that. but russians dont give a shit about book restoration and proper book storage - you can go to any public library to see examples of the horrors they do here. |
*book restoration * Why worry? :o) Scan 'em and burn 'em ! Juss kidin'! Kinda... |
Right. BTW, that your idea with opening a book-store honestly doesn't seem to be lucrative at first glance. I asked our risk-assesment specialist to consider it and a verdict was: "I would never recommend our company to get involved into anything like this". Sorry |

Ex-Монги эх! yeah the bookstore is never going to happen - i am sure of this |
that's cause nobody wants to lose money:) |
gogolesque2, don't worry. If your boss is OK with your translations, there is nothing more to say. If you want to be the best - go and be the best. Just don't give up. The more experience you get, the better you do your work. It is experience and mistakes that make a translator, not diploma. Stand up and fight! |
2DarkWolf: Ё... |
*When you say this once more, your pig will spread her wings and fly.* Cos it would do anything to escape such a stubborn moron :o) |
|
link 14.07.2006 14:03 |
DarkWolf and all: thanks for the honesty, thanks for the advice, thanks for the support |
:))))))))))))) |
Translator's credo "Thou should not translate into any other tongue but your mother's no matter what degrees you happen to hold" (unless you are a linguistic genius :-)) |
Ех-Монги, скорее просто псих-позитивист :))) Скай, it is the result that matters, not pig's motives. 2 Althea |
2 Dark Wolf: your definition of "genius" в студию, please. PS. Popular psychology 101, anyone? |
"PS. Popular psychology 101, anyone?" Dat be me, fellow coed!:) |
to gogolesque2: Are you British? to Dark Wolf: Xcuse me, what's "to get the right filling"? :) |
Do you feel 99% better now? |

olya im an american, but hold the british in high regard. and to all: |
it's (a) actually beyond any doubt |
|
link 17.07.2006 14:13 |
V oh, i just knew that you loved me! (read with severe sarcasm, please) and i just know that we are forever going to be the 'bestest' of friends! |
|
link 17.07.2006 14:19 |
:) oh how i love you, you son-of-a-bitch! :) let's do lunch! |

V oh V, don't ever shut-up. i won't have anyone to laugh at anymore :) |
Clue of the day: Вы побольше завешивайте своей позорной муры на форум - смех Вам будет обеспечен :-) |
|
link 17.07.2006 14:51 |
dont you already know that i laugh at myself everyday? im getting bored of that. i think its time to move on to laughing at you instead. you are much more ridiculous. |
|
link 17.07.2006 14:51 |
and your response was very predictable. try to be more creative, ok? you'll be more entertaining |
you'll make a perfect couple :) |
gogolesque2, you are a rare breed, really, the first American I meet who appreciates British English! :) |
olya, out of another three? :-)) |
|
link 18.07.2006 12:59 |
olya oh, im not the first! most of my friends are the same. its just so much more colorful and ineresting (and intelligent sounding) american english just tends to sound really brash and uneducated at times. |
to gogolesque: anyway, regarding your original question, one thing that sometimes helps, as odd as it sounds, is to stay somewhat detached instead of panicky when you feel that there are too many foreign words that you are supposed to but unable to remember, especially since you say you know enough of the legal stuff. you know, its like seeing a picture inside another picture when you stop focusing on the more obvious one? stuff suddenly springs up, quite often. :) Do you get what I mean or is it confusing? :) to D-50, another three who? |
never mind, just talking to myself |
|
link 18.07.2006 14:08 |
olya i know what you mean i think i get freaked out by the pressure of knowing that some insanely important person is depending on my translation |
well, the more reason to NOT freak out if your boss seems to be satisfied (which is the case as far as I understood)! You do something extra to what you have been trained to do, so this is kind of perfect! Would I make a good shrink? ;) |
|
link 18.07.2006 14:14 |
olya you would make a great mom! :) but the thing is, i know he says its satisfactory and most of it (98%) is for internal use, but i still dont want to be only satisfactory. thats like getting a 3 on an exam |
We moms think its not all the time an exam! :) Then you really DO NOT need other people telling you what they think, you can get ahead without it!! |
Aha! Why that's a smart thought! Gogo, you don't need people telling you about you! Exсept, maybe friends who can cheer you up. But you're strong, smart, and even if you're not perfect in translation now i think you're stubborn enough to achieve that in time! :) |
