OTTAWA (CP) - In an effort to rein in spending, the cabinet froze the size of the public service Tuesday and announced a ban on reclassification of government workers.

Finance Minister Ralph Goodale said major capital expenditures will also be frozen, subject to review by a cabinet committee. Goodale also said that cabinet will look at all expenditures during the next three months with an eye to saving money.

"We have taken immediate steps to find savings in the current fiscal year," Goodale said as he left a cabinet meeting.
