Spent catalysts due for unloading from a reactor are most of the time highly reactive materials, owing to their sulfided form. As such, they can react spontaneously when exposed to oxygen or air and require special handling, storage and transportation procedures. The presence of pyrophoric iron sulfide in spent catalyst, compounds the problem even more. Various precautions, including unloading under inert atmosphere, either by gravity or by vacuum, are recommended by specialized handling service companies for safety reasons. Catalyst passivation methods also exist to render the spent catalyst less hazardous, but they exhibit various degrees of success.
