In 1780 the construction stepped up as a pundit of antiquity and a follower of the famous Italian architect Antonio Palladi, the favourite architect of Katherine II Charles Cameron was invited to create the palace and park ensemble.

меня pundit смущает

Charles Cameron (Karl Karlovich)
(1743 - 1812)
Architect

A Scotsman in Russian service. Born to the wealthy family of a master builder. Studied under his father and independently. In 1767 moved to Rome where he studied and surveyed ancient monuments. On his return to England, he worked on the book "Roman Thermae" which was printed in London in 1772. In 1779 he moved to Russia at the invitation of Empress Catherine II. Was the architect at Tzarskoje Selo and Pavlovsk. Dismissed in 1796. Worked for Count Razumovsky at Baturino.

From 1802 occupied the post of head architect of the Admiralty Collegium. Retired in 1805. Cameron was considered a free architect and had no rank, although he received a pension from the imperial court. In addition to the aforementioned "Roman Thermae," Cameron also published albums of his engravings. Due to the intrigue initiated by Yury Velten, Cameron's attempts to become an academician of the Academy of the Arts were not successful.

Charles Cameron was a bold representative of Classicism in the history of Russian architecture, a master at interior design and a brilliant draughtsman.

His main work at Tzarskoje Selo includes the architectural ensemble of Charles Cameron (1780 - 1794) in the Catherine Park, including the Cold Baths pavilion and the Agate Rooms, and also the Cameron Gallery and the Pandus ; formal apartments and private chambers of Empress Catherine II in the Large (Catherine) Palace, the Chinese Village (1782 - 1796) in the Alexander Park, the Pyramid (1774 - 1781) in the landscape part of the Catherine Park.
