Ув. коллеги, подскажите пожалуйста, что может означать "may only". Сразу хочу сказать, что родной язык авторов оригинала английский, так что вариант с ляпом из-за незнания языка вряд-ли возможен. Заранее большое спасибо.

Возможно, здесь " e.g." можно было бы перевести как "в частности"... И так же в следующем появлении в этом же предложении, "(e.g., a desired function)"...

'may ( e.g., may only ) be input' is a strange way of expressing whatever the author is trying to say. Also, as leka11 says, you wouldn't normally use 'e.g.' here, just as you wouldn't normally say

* 'one or more (e.g., each) of the ingredients' or

* 'For each (e.g., only each) of the sample chemical compositions', or

* 'materials that may (e.g., may only) deliver',

which the author uses elsewhere in the same document.

If you look for this document in Google, and then search through the document, you'll find that the English in it, although good (9.5/10), is imperfect in parts. In particular, the author uses 'e.g.' 273 times in the document. In 80-90% of cases he uses it correctly, but in the rest he uses it incorrectly. In some of these cases he uses it instead of 'i.e.' (то есть); in other cases I can't work out what he's trying to say, but he's clearly using it incorrectly. Note also that in this whole (long) document, he uses 'i.e.' only once, compared to 'e.g.' 273 times.

You say that "родной язык авторов оригинала английский", but note that the main author (and one of the four inventors) has a Greek name (Iraklis Pappas); the second inventor has a Polish name and third and fourth have Vietnamese/Chinese/Korean names (I'm not sure which).

The author is using 'e.g.' too liberally so that, in some cases, the English doesn't make sense.
