There are lots of possibilities, depending on how graphic/figurative you want to be:

Neutral translations:

* Betis (have) shattered (the Basques'/Real Sociedad's) ambitions by 3 goals to 0 [=nil]

* Betis (have) killed off (the Basques'/Real Sociedad's) ambitions by ......

* Betis (have) completely crushed (the Basques'/Real Sociedad's) ambitions by .......

More graphic/figurative translations:

* Betis (blew/have blown) (the Basques'/Real Sociedad's) ambitions out of the water by ......

* Betis (have) steamrollered (the Basques'/Real Sociedad's) ambitions by ......

* Betis (drove/have driven) a coach and horses through (the Basques'/Real Sociedad's) ambitions by ......

* Betis (have) bulldozed (the Basques'/Real Sociedad's) ambitions by ......

You might want to use just 'Real's ambitions' rather than 'Real Sociedad's ambitions' if it's obvious the author/commentator is talking only about R.S.

johnstephenson. And what would say about "decimate"?

 User

would you say

 johnstephenson

User: 'decimated' is probably OK in this case. It literally means 'to destroy 90% of (sth)' or 'to kill 9 out of every 10 people', of course, but a lot of people -- inc sports commentators -- use it loosely/figuratively to mean either 'to do huge damage to (sth)' or 'to destroy (sth) completely'.

How about 'trampled over'?

johnstephenson, than you!

(There is a thing that I'd like to notice. One should never want to use 'Real'  instead of 'Real Sociedad" because 1) this is the authentic club's name and, moreover, 2) there are two 'Reals' in La Liga, and 'Real' is always considered to be refering to 'Real' (Madrid) with context playing almost no role in resolving this ambiguity.)

User: OK, 'the Basques' or 'Real Sociedad' only, then. :-)

Rus_Land: 'trampled over' is also fine -- so the asker is (spoilt/spoiled) for choice (https://www.multitran.com/m.exe?a=3&sc=9&s=spoiled+for+choice&l1=1&l2=2).

Rus_Land: Thanks!

mikhailS: амбиции: That depends on whether "прошелся по амбициям басков" means that Betis have destroyed RS's hopes for the future (promotion, winning the cup or whatever), or is just a set expression meaning that they've crushed them on this one occasion -- doesn't it?

+ pooped on their parade в каких-то случаях подойдет

Yes, John, it certainly does)

However, there's a third possibility: the author could have just been inebriated in his own verbosity, which, I think, is the case here (hence my suggestion to get rid of the "flowers" and keep the translation simple and succinct).

I could be wrong, though.

Correction: inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity

No wonder I had that little nagging feeling that something wasn't quite right about the quote..)))

You can fast become famous and great

Only pooping on author's parade...

But beware of a vicious loop:

You may step on your very own poop...
