Synthesis of Poly(vinylpyrrolidone)sulfobetaines [PVPS] through Betainization. 2-Chloro-3′,4′-hydroxyacetophenone (CCDP, catechol) quaternized polyvinylpyrrolidone (C-PVP) was synthesized following a method similar to that of our previous work.2 Briefly, 3 g of C-PVP and 1,3-propane sultone (1.43 g) was dissolved in cosolvent THF/ethanol in a 1:1 ratio at room temperature. The solution was then stirred for 24 h at 40 °C. After being stirred, the solvent was evaporated using a rotary evaporator and precipitated using n-hexane. The resulting PVPS was dried under vacuum. The yield of the product was 91%.
