2 (slang) annoyed, disgusted http://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/us/pig-sick The slang term pig sick refers not to a real physical sickness or illness but to an acute state of mind — annoyed, saddened, displeased, discontented or indignant about something. То есть иностранцы, должно быть, испытывают сильное недовольство - досаду, раздражение, возмущение и т.п. Типа, иностранцев все это, наверное, уже достало. Что именно им не нравится и как их это задевает - тут неясно, нужен контекст. |

'to (feel or be) (as) sick as (a pig or a parrot)' = humorous set expression meaning 'to be (annoyed/disappointed) at what has happened', as in: * 'I bought a winning lottery ticket -- but then lost the ticket, so couldn't claim my £10 million prize. So I felt sick as a pig!' |

One person is 'as sick as a pig'; Several people are 'as sick as pigs'. |

It can also mean 'physically sick', ie nauseous. Whether it's meant literally (nauseous) or figuratively (annoyed/disappointed) depends on the context. |
in this particular context foreigners are supposed to be sick as pigs with jealousy at British mastery of pomp and circumstance. |

Interesting. You can certainly be 'sick as a pig' with jealousy. |

Thanks for that. Being very uncultured I didn't even realise that Sue Townsend had died (in 2014), nor that she was ill for most of her life, inc having a heart attack in her 30s, going blind (from diabetes) in 2001 and dying (of a stroke) aged just 68. Incredible -- what a waste. Also she was a republican, so presumably when she had Adrian Mole refer to foreigners being jealous of our Royal Family and our supposed mastery of pomp and circumstance, she (though not Adrian Mole) was writing very ironically? |
I had no idea about her hardships either. Wouldn't call it a waste or a tragically early exit though, many took a much shorter stub at it :) The book certainly has a large element of social satire in it: from the extracts that I did read (couldn't bring myself to go the whole hog) I conclude that in the eyes of the author the main protagonist is a wanker, for the lack of a better word. |
нет такого идиоматического выражения в английском, скорее всего это библейская отсылка |
Каких только животных не подставляли во фразу as sick as ... :) Там и cat, и dog, и horse, и parrot (и мышонок, и лягушка, и неведома зверушка :). Есть и pig - это зарегистрировал Longman Idioms Dictionary: be sick as a pig Даже почему-то mud сюда же идет: He's as sick as mud about it. He moons broodingly to and fro, looking like Hamlet. Самым хитрым оказался Partridge Dictionary of Slang. Он не стал утруждать себя перечислением животных, а написал: sick as an ANIMAL |
