Subject: maries mus.
строка из песни The Sisters of Mercy - Something Fast

You can stand all night
At a red light anywhere in town
Hailing maries left and right
But none of them slow down

maries в данном контексте как лучше перевести?

Заранее спасибо за ответы.

да, это логично - Hail Mary
(во всех текстах песни в инете maries с маленькой буквы, я думал, что может есть какое-то сленговое словечко)

Да, значение здесь действительно очень сниженное, практически до регистра улиц, т.е. то налево, то направо обращаясь к обнаженным махам.

It should be either 'Hailing Marys' or 'Hailing Maries' -- both plurals of Mary (the name). The fact that 'maries' isn't capitalised isn't significant; it's just a mistake.

It's a play on two set expressions:

1. 'Hail Mary' (Аве Мария) = a prayer in various churches. In the Roman Catholic and certain other churches, it's also a prayer you make after confessing to a priest that you've done something wrong/immoral.

2. To 'hail a taxi' = (of a passenger) to stop a moving taxi (in order to get a lift somewhere) by waving at the taxi driver from a pavement.

The author's merged the two to form a completely new term, 'Hailing Marys'. He's saying that there are 'Marys' (here=prostitutes) 'left and right' (=everywhere you look) 'hailing' (=signalling to) potential customers driving past -- but none of the drivers are stopping....
