Why would they be writing down coordinates on the map? Shouldn't it be obvious from the map in the first place?

Try to use your imagination. Think you've been hunted by armed headhunters and need to survive at all costs. Do you really think it woud be easier to locate your target point by coordinates at the map instead of writing down them beforehand in order not to waste you time and save your life?
