What awful advertiser's bull! 'in a brand-conscious way' presumably = being very aware of brands/designer labels when you're shopping for/buying things. |
а вот оказывается у brand-conscious два значения - одно со стороны потребителя, и другое - со стороны продавца: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/brand-conscious |
John, not all boosters are brand-conscious. I recall the times, when eye-catchy names and slogans were thought more important than implied double meaning. For instance, компания "Тамбовский волк" that positioned itself with the slogan "Волки - надежные партнеры". Just to explain, as you are not a native Russian speaker: the wolf has always been a source of trouble and danger in the context of Russia. The two popular sayings about it are "Тамбовский волк тебе товарищ" & "Сколько волка ни корми, он всё в лес смотрит". |

What's a booster? |
Probably related to this: 2. booster - someone who is an active supporter and advocatebooster - someone who is an active supporter and advocate |

Interesting. Looks like one of those American imports. ОФФ: Rutland in Vermont is one of many place names in the US that were named after British towns/cities/counties: New York (after the Duke of York, from York in England), Boston, New Hampshire, Manchester, Lincoln, Plymouth, Oxford, Dover, Birmingham, Rochester and scores more. Usually they were given the names by British colonists who settled there. |
They also have Moscow, St. Petersburg... :0) |

Incredible. I'm surprised those names survived McCarthyism -- they're communist! |

Paris, Odessa, no imagination. |
they did survive because placenames, however communist, were certainly not, and could hardly be among Senator McCarthy's primary targets that included state employees, Hollywood entertainers, union activists, community organizers, etc. |

what's so communist about St. Petersburgs? let's take the one in Florida for example. people who founded it in 1880s probably had to do with communism about as much as Saint Peter did |

johnstephenson Beware! There are some 'official' forum jokers here, so if you try to crack a joke, you may get slapped on the wrist! |
"They also have Moscow"
As a part of a coin toss bet, the winner, Peter Demens, named the land after Saint Petersburg, Russia, while Williams opted to name the first hotel built which was named the Detroit Hotel, both named after their home towns respectively |
Интересно, спасибо, Bultimdin. |
